For the first time in a long time I thought - "okay. I'm finally building something I can count on, that would keep me safe. My own system. My own container to rely upon".

Then one afternoon, a triangular form cleaves open and pours light outward instead of holding it within.

And the entire strategy shook. Making me think I might have built a business model around something that goes against my fundamental creative nature.

After three months away from the practice, I came back to continue quiet series, my latest body of work, ceramic objects that hold light inside a protected body.

I couldn't. This came instead.

A form I'd never made before. Triangular from the back - stable, grounded, complete in itself. Open from the front - the interior revealed, the light pouring out.

I sat with it. I started asking, why this shape. Why open. Why now.

The pieces I'd made before arrived when I was learning to hold things safely within - light kept inside because inside felt like the only safe place.

This form arrived after a time away from clay. A hard ending. Some losses on the way. The kind of period that leads you to work on inner safety.

The walls had opened inside me. The form opened too. Not because the light needs protecting any less, but because the ground beneath had become solid enough that it didn't need walls.

Light contained versus revealed. Not an aesthetic shift. But what inner work looks like in clay.

And if each piece is a mirror, each one arrives once. Unrepeatable. Singular. You cannot reproduce an inner state on demand.

Writing in my journal that day, I've realized I'm always trying to settle.

And then it changes. Every time. A continuum. No end. Constant change. Evolving. Development. Depth after depth.

lauri. is a living body of work. I am the body of work. The forms change as the inner life changes.

This scared me. Because it means art more than design. One-offs. No scaling possible in the classical way. It narrows all channels I strategized about. Goes to collectibles.

It means recognition. Gallery representation. It feels like a wild card.

What broke wasn't just the plan. It was what the plan was carrying. Creating external safety for myself through what I love, creative expression that also gives me solid ground. At least in the form I've envisioned it before. My hands didn't just mirror the inner work. They forced me to live it. Is the inner ground solid enough to hold regardless of the plan?

What I did know even on that day was this: “ I want, I need, I deserve to stay honest to myself and my practice. And set her free.”

Looking back, I began to understand that this is not just how I make ceramics. It's how everything actually works for me. It's my sequence:

presence → emergence → act.

It doesn't work starting with the strategy, not even with the intention. It has to be presence first. Something shifts when I stop trying to make things happen and just show up - in clay, in writing, in conversation. And from that presence, something emerges. Not planned or forced. It just arrives.

Quiet series emerged from a broken piece. My hands placed a light source within the raw clay and worked by themselves.

This new form emerged after months away from clay, right after working on inner safety. My hands knew what my mind was still processing.

I didn't expect this uncertainty to become itself a door.

I started writing - here, on Substack - and more honestly so than I'd allowed myself before.

And something else emerged from it all, understanding that what I do in clay and in sessions - holding space for what wants to come to light - is the same thing I do in a room with people. A pull to open my sanctuary to eight people, put raw clay in their hands, give them the same mirror I myself have faced, and experiment together with what surfaces when we let the inside emerge through presence and form.

The hands know before the mind does. I'm planning to follow them for now. And see what comes next.

It's something in the quiet, in the silence, in the stillness of these images, that's soothing me. A presence without noise. Things simply being what they are.

I've been taking these photos. Returning to them. Sitting with them. Longer than makes obvious sense.

And I became curious, why am I being drawn to them, what fascinates me about these particular images? What's behind?

And the answer was: Nothing performing. Nothing asking anything of me.

Turns out this is not just a feeling. It's biology.

The nervous system is always scanning. Looking for threat, for demand, for what needs doing next. Most of it happens beneath our awareness. A constant background hum of what's required here.

Certain things interrupt that.

Not grand things. Not even beautiful things necessarily. Just things that simply are. When the eye lands on something without urgency, without complexity, the nervous system gets a rare message: nothing is required here. The scanning softens. The breath drops.

Directed attention, the kind you use to work, decide, navigate, perform, gets to finally rest.

Neuroaesthetics calls this the restorative quality of certain environments and images. The Kaplans call it soft fascination. The way something holds you just enough. Not demanding. Not releasing. Just.. holding. Your eye stays without trying. Something settles.

But soft fascination is just one answer to one need.

Zooming out, the principle is bigger. Stephen Porges' Polyvagal Theory sits underneath all of it - the idea that the nervous system is constantly reading the environment for cues of safety or threat. Images are environment to the nervous system. It doesn't fully distinguish between standing in a place and looking at one. It responds either way.

When basic safety is established, other needs emerge. And different images answer different needs.

The research points in this direction. So does paying attention to myself - not the full picture, but a partial map of what we might encounter most often:

When we need safety, we're drawn to enclosed spaces, warm light, soft edges. Interiors. A blanket. A candle. Not aesthetics. Shelter seeking.

When we need vitality, we're drawn to movement, color, contrast. Bold compositions. The reason certain images feel energizing rather than restoring. The nervous system was depleted in a different direction - not overstimulated, but flat - and it reaches for aliveness.

When we need connection, we're drawn to faces, eyes, hands. Even in art. Even in strangers. Looking for - am I seen, am I with someone, am I safe with others.

When we need awe, we're looking for vastness. Skies. Oceans. Mountains. Research shows awe literally shifts self-perception — the sense of self shrinks in the best way. Nervous system overwhelm dissolved by something bigger than the problem.

And when we need meaning, we find images that point toward something. That have a beyond. That refuse to stay on the surface. Like art. According to Zeki, the search for meaning is part of the aesthetic experience itself, neurologically. Frankl called it our primary drive towards meaning. This one it's more like the soul needing to be fed.

And, of course, there is pure aesthetic pleasure. The brain’s reward center responding to beauty — proportion, harmony, light falling exactly right. Neuroaesthetics began here. The eye landing on something beautiful is its own form of regulation.

Something else interesting, a photo of stillness is sometimes more restorative than the moment itself.

The frame removed the noise and the need to process the environment with all its sounds and feelings. What remains is only the quality itself. In this case, silence, curated. In others, energy, curated, aliveness, or safety, or togetherness, or delight.

Putting it all together, we don't really choose images. We're called by them. And what calls us is almost always a map of what we're missing. When we're drawn to certain images, we're not just responding to aesthetics. We're responding to physiological need.

I'm learning to follow that. To notice when my eye stops somewhere soft and remember that it's not random. To read it as information. Not nostalgia. Not aesthetics. To remember it speaks to what I need. To acknowledge and answer.
